ReelOzInd! returns in a milestone year with the theme imajinasi
In 2015, the Australia-Indonesia Centre invited a group of people passionate about strengthening ties between our two nations to imagine new ways of connecting our cultures and sharing our stories. Across more than 70 years of history between our two nations, countless exchanges, linkages, networks—institutional, diplomatic, or individual—have benefited and enriched both countries. But we wondered if we could envision new ways to reach young people, harness new technologies and showcase creative storytelling.
A decade later, in 2025, we are thrilled to launch the 10th Call for Submissions for the ReelOzInd! Australia Indonesia Short Film Festival and our theme IMAJINASI.
Across the nine festivals to date, we have featured over 220 short films from Australian and Indonesian filmmakers in our live pop-up screening and online program. Our much-loved and valued screening partners and friends of the festival have hosted over 100 pop-up events in locations across the two countries.
The decision to feature different genres of film—documentary, fiction, animation—and encourage young filmmakers, has meant ReelOzInd! always offers “something for everyone” and celebrates the array of brilliant cinematic talent in both our countries. Our festival audiences are routinely moved to tears, gripped by laughter, and left in awe by the end of a screening. They have never failed to be impressed by the quality of filmmaking on display.
Our festival format of launching a new theme each year, has shown that universal sentiments, reflections and narratives break through any barriers that might be brought by language, borders or cultural difference.
This year should be no exception, and indeed we aim to deliver our best festival yet!
Ten years ago, ReelOzInd! was born from a place of imagination with a vision to share our stories in a fun and exciting way. Now, we call on filmmakers from Indonesia and Australia to once again celebrate their creativity through our 2025 theme: IMAGINATION / IMAJINASI.
