A Decade of Coming Together (2016-2026)

ReelOzInd! celebrates a special milestone with the theme Ambang/Threshold

In 2026, ReelOzInd! marks a decade of coming together to share our stories through the powerful medium of short film. Festival director Jemma Purdey reflects on the journey so far.

“Since 2016 ReelOzInd! has been a regular fixture for filmmakers and audiences in Indonesia and Australia. Our audiences from Melbourne to Malang, Samarinda to Sydney and so many places in between, have laughed and cried together; but most importantly, we’ve been given a window into each other’s cultures, imaginations, places, and people. Even though we’re such close neighbours these opportunities to share our stories are still rare and so we cherish this part of what we do.”

In a nod to the past whilst looking clearly to the future, this year’s festival theme is Ambang/Threshold.

“Ambang/Threshold evokes a sense of preparing to embark on a new adventure and taking a moment to look back. It’s about pushing the limits and jumping into the unknown. But it’s also about stopping to consider our present moment. We love the sense of liminality and precarity, but also of hope embodied in this year’s theme.”

Every year filmmakers challenge us to go to new places, present us with new experiences, ideas, and stretch our boundaries. We can’t wait to see where they take us in 2026.
